Teaching Activities

From 2007, entrepreneurship and innovation units of study are offered to undergraduate and postgraduate students. The philosophy behind the teaching of these units is to give students the opportunity to learn by doing. This is achieved through student participation in a number of live business projects within the local community, where students join in business planning and problem solving.

Undergraduate Studies

Undergraduate students can elect a unit of study in their third year called "Global Entrepreneurship & Enterprise". This subject is designed to be a 'capstone' for students' previous studies, aiming to ensure undergraduate students receive practical experience and skills.

Postgraduate Studies

Postgraduate students are sourced from two 'streams' of applicants, enrolling as: business students completing a masters degree majoring in entrepreneurship, and non-business students from other faculties and backgrounds completing a graduate certificate majoring in innovation & enterprise.

  1. Master of Commerce Majoring in Entrepreneurship - Students undertaking a Master of Commerce or Master of Business can tailor their studies to earn a major in Entrepreneurship. This major exposes students to key practical and theoretical aspects of launching, growing and re-invigorating a venture. The courses are structured around 'problem-based learning' so that students are challenged to develop existing intellectual property or businesses. The major is relevant to students with an interest in business innovation and growth, providing skills and knowledge relevant for entrepreneurs, policy makers, venture capitalists, and advisors.
  2. Graduate Certificate in Innovation and Enterprise - Students undertaking this course undertake four units of study. Students will include 24 scholarship-holders completing research-degrees at the University of Sydney (for example from the Faculties of Science, Medicine or the Arts) as part of the Commonwealth Government initiative, the Commercialisation Training Scheme. Three of the units of study are structured around problem-based learning with intensive workshops and seminars, with the fourth unit being a special research project. Two new units were offered in 2009, IBUS 6016 Social Entrepreneurship (to be co-taught with the US Studies Centre) and IBUS 6017 Enterprise & the Creative Industries. From 2009, students are able to major in a number of alternative streams, including social entrepreneurship, technology entrepreneurship and enterprise in the creative industries.

Students currently enrolled in a PhD are eligible for a scholarship under the Commercialisation Training Scheme. View Scholarship Information.
